Combining traditional wood finishes with contemporary metals, this kitchen creates a contrast between old and new.
The furniture has been finished in both quarter and crown cut veneer, helping to create subtle changes in the texture of door frontages. These two cutting methods acheive different grain patterns by placing the tree's growth rings differently in relation to the slicing machine.
The wall and base cabinets feature veneer cut perpendicular to the growth rings producing a quarter cut venerr with a more consistent 'striped' appearance. These more uniform lines ultimately help the visual flow around the space. to contrast the consistent texture of the quarter cut veneer, crown cut veneer with a more random grain pattern has been used in the taller units. Although the wood texture remains subtle, the swirls in the grain help add to the larger, tall, cabinets housing a microwave and double oven.
The addition of frosted glass cabinets further enhances both the visual and tactile properties of the design. The inclusion of the stainless steel on the drawer fronts adds contemporary detail and a focal point to the room. The circular glass-top table cleverly dissects the wall utilising an otherwise 'dead space' and importantly, provides a space for casual dining and seating. the brown flecks throughout the matt laminate worktop and upstand complement the oak furniture. Laminate worksurfaces come in a variaty of designs and finishes and are a more affordable alternative to granite and corian.
A careful selection of appliances complement the stainless steel finishes featured elsewhere within the design. the centrally located AEG hob, stainless steel splashback and matching extractor, along with the drawer fronts, create a feature within this design. Integration of the fridge freezer and dishwasher means these appliance fronts are concealed, ensuring the visual flow of the kitchen is uninterrupted.
